The base subscription that gives each user Teams for chat and meetings. Most businesses already have it.

2️⃣ A Teams Phone licence

An add-on that turns Teams into a phone. Some enterprise plans, such as Microsoft 365 E5, already include it.

3️⃣ A calling path and numbers

The link between Teams and the public phone network. It gives each user a phone number and lets them call any landline or mobile.

Three ways to connect Teams to the phone network

Users see the same Teams app in all three cases. The difference is who supplies your numbers, who runs the technical link, and how much control you keep.

☁️ Microsoft Calling Plans

Microsoft is your phone company. It supplies the numbers and the call minutes and bills you directly. Microsoft lists Luxembourg as a Calling Plans country.
Fits: small teams with simple needs that want one supplier.

🔌 Operator Connect

A telecom operator certified by Microsoft supplies the numbers. You assign them in the Teams admin centre. The operator runs the technical link.
Fits: businesses that want a local operator and simple admin inside Teams.

🛡️ Direct Routing

A Session Border Controller (SBC), a secure gateway for phone calls, links Teams to an operator's network. You, a partner or the operator runs it.
Fits: businesses that need more control, numbers in several countries, or a link to an existing phone system.
🔀 You can mix models. One company account in Microsoft 365 (called a tenant) can use more than one calling path. Some companies do this during a migration, or when one country needs a different setup.

Common questions

❓ Is Teams Phone included in Microsoft 365?
Usually not. Most business plans need a Teams Phone add-on for each user who makes calls. Some enterprise plans, such as Microsoft 365 E5, include it. You still need a calling path on top.
❓ Are Microsoft Calling Plans available in Luxembourg?
Yes. Microsoft lists Luxembourg as a country where you can buy Calling Plans. Operator Connect and Direct Routing are the alternatives if you prefer a local operator or need numbers in several countries.
❓ Can I keep my current phone numbers?
In most cases, yes. Your numbers move to the new provider through a process called porting. Ask the provider how long it takes and what happens if it fails.
❓ Can I use Teams and a Cloud PBX together?
Yes. With Direct Routing, Teams can connect to a Cloud PBX. Staff call from Teams, while the Cloud PBX keeps queues, reception and call recording. This is often called a hybrid setup.
❓ What happens to calls if the internet or Microsoft 365 goes down?
Teams calls stop working. Some providers can send calls to mobile phones or another number when this happens. Ask each provider how they keep calls running during an outage.
